Hello lovely people! I’m sharing something a little different today and I’ve really been looking forward to writing this post for you guys! This is a lengthy post but it’s packed full of information and there may or may not be a discount code for ya at the end! 😉
As you probably know, Charlie and I went on a cruise earlier this month to celebrate our anniversary. I thought I should have a little color to my skin for a trip to the Caribbean but it was still winter so real color wasn’t an option. And even if it were, I try not to get too much sun these days. Tryin’ to protect the skin, ya know?
Anywho, I usually use self tanner to get that fake glow but I decided to go all out and get a S-P-R-A-Y T-A-N for this splendid occasion. This was my first ever spray tan which is why I want to share it with you guys! I was nervous about the process so I figured I would help out my fellow first time spray tanners with a little insight into the experience.
I feel like a lot more of us have used self tanner at home than have gotten spray tans. Self tanner is more affordable and, for whatever reason, feels less permanent. We also have no one else to blame if it ends up looking horrible. 😛
Vacay Beauty reached out to me a couple of weeks before my vacation (having no clue I even had a vacation scheduled) offering to give me a free spray tan for nothing more than a review on her Facebook page and a social media share. I figured why the heck not?! It was perfect timing and I’d always wanted to try it. So I went for it!
Before I dive into this, like I mentioned, my spray tan was completely free but this post is not sponsored. She didn’t even know I was going to be writing a blog post about this until after I got back form vacation. 😉 It just seemed like a topic that might help some of you out which is why I want to share some of the questions I had along the way, what I wish I had done differently, and some helpful pointers! So let’s dive right in!
Questions You Should Ask Before Your Spray Tan
Will this suit my skin tone?
My single biggest fear about getting a spray tan was that I was going to look like a carrot, an Oompa Loompa, an orange cream sickle… you get the point. I didn’t want to look orange.
Before your spray tan, you should ask if the tan will suit your skin tone to avoid that icky orange look. Again, this is the one and only time I’ve ever gotten a spray tan, so I can’t speak for other spray tanners, but Vacay Beauty mixes the spray tan solution to match your skin tone and tan preferences. She even has a questionnaire asking what your skin tone is like, how your skin reacts to the sun, and what type of tan you’re trying to accomplish to help make sure the color is as perfect and natural as possible for you!
What should I do to prepare for the spray tan?
I was also nervous about making sure I was prepared for my spray tan. Did I need to do anything specific to prep my skin? Did I need to wear anything specific? Did I need to be able to stand on my head in order for the color to go on evenly?
The answer to all of those questions was yes. Kidding, I didn’t have to be able to stand on my head. 😉 But I did have to prep my skin and make sure I had dark, loose fitting clothes to wear afterwards.
Vacay Beauty did a great job of telling me how to best prepare for my spray tan. She recommend exfoliating, shaving and waxing 24-48 hours prior to my spray tan. These things would help the color go on as evenly as possible. She also told me not to have any lotions or makeup on my skin for the same reason.
And, like I mentioned, she told me to be sure that I had dark and loose clothes to wear afterwards so that they spray tan wouldn’t be rubbed off by a tight pair of pants. She also recommended avoiding sweating, skin on skin contact, or showering for the first 10-12 hours after the spray tan.
How long will the spray tan last?
I imagine that this answer is pretty similar for most spray tans, but Vacay Beauty’s spray tans last for 7-10 days depending on what you’re doing and how well you take care of your spray tan. My tan lasted right at a week before it started fading and I was in pool water, shaving more frequently and was fairly active most days. I would say that’s really good considering even at my most sedentary I usually have to reapply self tanner every 3 days!
How do I take care of the spray tan?
Taking care of the spray tan was a lot easier than I thought it would be. The first 12 hours after the spray tan were the hardest because I was making sure I didn’t do anything to rub the tan off before I rinsed. The first time you shower after getting your spray tan should be 10-12 hours later and you should only rinse off with water, meaning you shouldn’t wash with soap.
Otherwise, treat your skin as if you had on self tanner. Make sure you stay nice and moisturized and avoid strong abrasion of the skin! I found it much easier to maintain than self tanner!
Rookie Mistakes to Avoid Making
Consider Your Tan Lines
On to the good stuff, I made a total rookie mistake that I don’t want any of you to have to live through! So it’s story time: Vacay Beauty gives you disposable bras and panties to wear if you’re not comfortable going completely nude and don’t want to wear your own undies. I wore a pair of her disposable panties and it ended up hysterically disastrous.
She told me to take a look in the mirror and make sure the underwear were where I wanted before she got started. I just looked down to make sure they weren’t crooked and I was like “I’m good to go!” I didn’t take into account that they rode half way up my back so, in the end, I had a gigantic thong tan line that stuck out of my bathing suit bottoms.
This was NOT a cute look. It looked super trashy and I like to consider myself to be a fairly classy lady. I was SO embarrassed! And this was no fault of Vacay Beauty’s because she told me to check! It was a total rookie mistake and I URGE you to consider your tan lines before going into your spray tan. I will definitely wear a pair of my own, old and/or black underwear next time to avoid that tragedy again.
I will tell ya though, Charlie really helped save the day. He literally took a q-tip and used it to color in the tacky tan lines with self tanner. A real keeper of a husband, that guy!
Think About When You’ll be Able to Shower for the First Time After Your Spray Tan
Make sure you think about when you’ll be able to rinse off after your spray tan and schedule the time accordingly! Charlie and I were leaving for vacation at 5am the next morning so I would have been getting up around 4am to rinse off. Between that and the tan line tragedy, I decided to shower the night prior. I waited until right before going to bed so the tan had about 7 hours to set into my skin but it definitely could have used longer.
I didn’t mess up the tan, I still had a good amount of color and everything was even, but I would have liked if it were a bit darker which could have been the case if I had waited longer to shower. However, I did follow the rules and only rinsed off with water, so that definitely helped as well!
Get Waxed and Get Your Nails Done Prior to getting a Spray Tan
So this was actually not a mistake I made but only because I happened to mention it to Vacay Beauty and she was able to intervene prior to me making any mistakes! I was going to get a bikini wax and a manicure the day before we left for vacation so it was all nice and fresh for our trip but that would have been bad.
Luckily Vacay Beauty advised me to switch the order of events and get my wax and nails done before getting my spray tan. A wax takes dead skin cells along with the hair which naturally would have messed up the appearance of my tan in that area. And, as far as manicures go, they do a lot of scrubbing, clipping, and other crazy things around your nail beds which would have led to some funky looking fingers had I waited to get them done after my spray tan.
Post Spray Tan Maintenance Tips
Shave with Hair Conditioner
Vacay Beauty recommended shaving with hair conditioner instead of with bar soap or shaving cream because it helps the razor glide over your skin without removing any dead skin cells. So I followed her instruction and had no issues with the tan on my legs fading any sooner than any other parts of my body!
Wash Your Body with Your Hands
I washed my body with my hands instead of with a loofa or a wash cloth to avoid any unnecessary abrasion against my spray tan. I used a loofa in the important places if you know what I mean but, as for my arms, stomach, back and legs I just used soap and my hands!
This doesn’t take much explanation, just make sure you keep your skin super moisturized! This will really help the life of your spray tan! This also goes for what you put in your body too, not just what you put on it. Make sure you’re staying hydrated! Drinking water is just as important as putting lotion on.
Dry Off Gently
When you’re drying off after a shower or being in the pool, make sure your just patting your skin dry with a towel. Try to avoid rubbing your skin because that will rub your spray tan off.
Was it worth it?
100%! A spray tan lasts way longer than self tanner, for starters. So, in that regard, I would consider the money to be worth it because you get a longer lasting tan for a little extra money. But what’s better is that, at least for me, the spray tan looked way more natural and way more even! Plus I didn’t have the stress of trying to make sure I applied self tanner evenly and I wasn’t smelling like self tanner every 3 days or so. 😛
Would I do it again?
I actually already have another appointment booked! So… yes. 😉 I’ll be getting a natural and professional spray tan before my cousin’s wedding next month!
What would I do differently?
You probably know the answer to this but I will WEAR PROPER UNDERWEAR next time! I also made sure to schedule the spray tan for a time that was conducive to when I would be able to rinse off so I could give the tan the full time to develop!
What did I like and what did I not like?
I loved being tanned by Vacay Beauty! As I mentioned, I was pretty nervous about the spray tan for a number of reasons. First, I had so many questions. Vacay Beauty does a phenomenal job of walking you through everything you should do before hand and she explains everything during the spray tan process (what she’s putting on your body, what she’s doing and why she’s doing it).
It’s also always a fun time being practically naked in front of someone you barely know and she does a great job of making you feel comfortable! She’s super professional and super personable -the perfect combination!
I also like the she’s mobile and will come to you! That was totally worth the small additional fee for me (my tan was free but I did pay for travel). I will 100% have her come to me next time, too. She’s also super quick, super respectful of your space and is very clean! My house wasn’t stinky or brown after. 😉
I honestly can’t think of much that I didn’t like other than the mistakes I made that we discussed earlier. And of course I know how to avoid those issues now!
I hope you guys found this post helpful if you’re considering getting a spray tan for the first time! After all was said and done, I would 100% recommend it! If you’re a Philly local, Vacay Beauty has a couple of deals she’s offering! The first option is only for a limited time. She’s offering the classic Vacay Beauty spray tan for only $25 at her in home studio until the end of March (3/31/2019)! She’s also offering 20% off your first spray tan (excludes group packages) if you use the coupon code SAVVY20!
